Death Education is a Lot Like Sex Education
Fans of The Doyenne of Death know that my motto is “Just as talking about sex won’t make you pregnant, talking about funerals won’t make you dead.” I’m so glad to see an expert on medical care discussing end-of-life issues with a similar light touch on a serious subject.
Dr. Jessica Nutik Zitter, who practices critical care and palliative medicine at Highland Hospital in Oakland, CA, wrote this New York Times opinion piece, “First, Sex Ed. Then Death Ed.” She’s also the author of Extreme Measures: Finding a Better Path to the End of Life.
She proposes that we teach death education in schools, just as sex education is taught.

What are your views? In Britain, death remains an almost taboo subject in many families, usually until it is too late. Wouldn’t it be so much easier if families opened up and discussed what they want to happen when the inevitable time comes, however near or far away in the future it is?
